CONTEXT

In Mexico, 57% of the population does not have access to a reliable, safely managed water source. INEGI reports that 8.1 million homes lack piped water, and only 43.2% of rural areas have this service in their households.

TECHNOLOGY

Efficient rainwater harvesting systems provide families with a sustainable, high-quality water source at home, meeting up to 100% of their water needs. These systems decrease reliance on municipal water, result in significant energy savings and mitigate flooding.

AUTONOMY

Rainwater harvesting enhances community water autonomy by collecting, treating and storing clean water from rooftops, ensuring resilience amid declining conventional sources and promoting sustainable water management.

COLLABORATION

Isla Urbana USA acts as a bridge, connecting donors, partners, and volunteers to impactful rainwater initiatives in Mexico. At the same time it nurtures the growth of passionate water advocates, fostering a community dedicated to positive change.

NANDA JTSI

In San José Tenango, Oaxaca, this project enhances the Mazatec community's rainwater harvesting practices. It focuses on developing technology and training locals in installation, maintenance, and repair. By promoting durable, shared rainwater systems, the initiative aims for lasting impact. Local technicians and residents collaborate on installations with regional team support.

PROGRAM

Designed for international high school and university students, this program offers a unique, dynamic week-long adventure. It empowers young change-makers by exploring complex water challenges and rainwater harvesting technologies. Participants engage in hands-on learning, connect with community water advocates, and experience the rich culture and history of Mexico City, gaining skills to address global water issues.

PROGRAM

RAIN SCHOOLS

Transformative initiative aiming to establish sustainable water sources for public schools. The program provides knowledge and resources for harnessing rainwater comprehensively within schools, while also educating and advocating for better water practices. Its goal is to empower students, faculty, and parents as change agents, promoting a shift towards environmental sustainability and cultivating a new water culture within school communities.

HA TA TUKARI

"Water, Our Life" is a comprehensive intervention project in Mezquitic, Jalisco in the Huichol Sierra. The aim is to provide universal clean water to the Wixárika people through rainwater harvesting. Additionally, the program conducts educational and regenerative development and empathetic engagement efforts with children, youth, and adults in these communities.

YAXE

In Yaxe, Oaxaca, strained water access from agriculture and mining led to a successful rainwater harvesting initiative with U.S. and Mexico-based organizations. Families are now skilled water managers, youth engage through Rain Schools, and residential systems reduce reliance on dwindling wells. Women, as local water leaders, play a crucial role in meetings, maintenance, and follow-up, ensuring the initiative's success.

TLAMACAZAPA

The initiative aims to address severe water scarcity and infrastructure challenges in Nahuatl communities in Tlamacazapa, Guerrero through sustainable rainwater solutions, offering a crucial alternative amidst contamination issues in local wells containing high levels of coliforms, arsenic, and nitrates.

RAINWATER BRIGADES

Born after the 2017 Mexico City earthquake and revived post-Hurricane Otis in October 2023 in Guerrero, the Rainwater Brigade meets urgent water needs in disaster-hit communities. It started by deploying rainwater systems in San Gregorio Xochimilco for essential water supply. Today, the initiative persists, offering compact, user-friendly rainwater harvesting and purification technologies to thirsty families affected by recent disasters in Acapulco and surrounding areas.

URBAN PROGRAMS

Isla Urbana Mexico leads large-scale rainwater harvesting in Mexico, initially focusing on high-rainfall yet water-scarce areas south of Mexico City. Expanding to cities like Guadalajara, Guanajuato, and Monterrey, the work has set a precedent for expansive programs and collaborations with government and private partners to supply low-income communities. Concurrently, Isla Urbana's Social Business develops autonomous and robust high-quality rainwater harvesting technologies for private clients.
